We recommend washing nappies, wipes and cloth pads prior to use. inserts made from hemp and bamboo will take a few washes to reach maximum absorbency.
Washing your nappies;
Empty all solid waste into the toilet, any stubborn bits can be rinsed off. The nappy is then able to be "dry pailed". MCN do not need to be soaked in water and should never be put in napisan or bleach, it will break down the PUL and elastic. You can remove the inserts from the pockets before putting them in the nappy bucket if you wish.
On wash day put all the nappies and inserts into the machine. Check to make sure the nappies with hook and loop (velcro) have been folded over on to the laundry tabs to prevent snagging.
I do a short cold water pre-rinse in the machine for the nappies then add clothes etc for the wash cycle.
Add in detergent, use half or even less than that to prevent residue building up on the nappies. Build up will cause the nappies to repel the wee and could cause rashes.
I wash the nappies on a warm short cycle and this has always been enough to ensure they are clean. Any stains will benefit fron hanging in the sun, the UV light is a great stain remover and sanitiser! I personally do not recommend using a tumble dryer to speed up the drying process, it can cause damage to the PUL and elastic.
Washing you cloth pads;
Place used pads in a small container filled with water (a 2l icecream container is ideal) so the pads can soak until you are ready to wash, use of a soak like the Scarlet Secret is optional.
When you are doing your nappy load just empty the water from the container, and put them in the wash. Gardens love the water from your pad container!
Pads will also benefit from sun drying to help rid them of stains.
