There is a myriad of information on Modern Cloth Nappies available online so rather than get into to much detail I will keep it relatively simple!
The different types of MCN available are....
All In Ones (AIO) are a fitted nappy that has a built in waterproof layer. AIO nappies are favoured by people wanting a simple nappy that is easy to use. A true AIO will often take a while to dry so some will be sewn with fold in flaps that will assist in speeding up the drying time while still essentially keeping a one piece nappy.
Fitted Nappies are shaped nappies made from an absorbent material and fastened with hook and loop, snaps or a snappy. They will require a waterproof cover.
Pocket Nappies are a fitted shell that you put absorbent inserts into. This type of nappy allows for easy customisation of the absorbency.
Covers are used over fitted nappies, they are made from a waterproof material like PUL or a water resistant material like fleece or wool.
Materials commonly used in MCN...
PUL is polyurethane laminate. It is applied to the back of fabrics to make a waterproof layer.
Bamboo is an ultra absorbent material and it is lovely and soft.
Hemp is commonly used in MCN, it is stronger and more absorbent than cotton. It also has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties.
Flannelette a tightly woven and brushed cotton. Used alot for nappy inners and the topping for cloth pads.
Fleece is a water resistant fabric, used commonly as a nappy inner as it pulls moisture away from the baby and keeps them feeling dry. It is also suitable as an outer cover.
Microfibre a very absorbent fabric, the downside to the amount it can absorb is that it will leak when compressed. It is also not a fabric that shoudl be placed directly next to your babies skin. It is commonly used for inner layers in AIO's or AIO/Pocket nappies.
How many do you need...
To use MCN full time it is recommended you have around 24 nappies which will allow you to wash every second day. Sometimes it can be hard to stop there!!
Why we love MCN...
It is just so simple! No more soaking, they are cute, no more fiddly pins and plastic pilchers and did we mention they are cute! We use cloth to cut down our contribution to landfill from household waste, the economical benefits are hard to argue with, you can save thousands by using MCN rather than disposables and you can extend the cost benefits by using your nappy stash on your future babies.
